Open A Sewer House Trap Properly | Prevent Sewage Water Damage
Learning the correct way how to open a sewer house trap is more important than most folks think. Opening the wrong sewer trap plug first can lead to sewer water flooding and damage, which is unnecessary. NOTE: Always open the street side plug first in case you have a sewer trap stoppage. That way when you open the house side plug the water can flow over the trap and the water can head out towards the street. Watch this video to see this for yourself! For more information read this complete house sewer trap tutorial: www.balkanplumbing.com/house-sewer-trap-line-drain-tutorial/

    2nd floor clog in the bathtub. Running an auger down the bathtub drain does nothing. Run the auger about 8-9 feet down the pipe below the bathroom sink in the same bathroom removes the clog. Have to auger it once a year. Now it’s backed up but it takes time to back up. Can take a shower for 4-5 minutes before the water starts pooling in the tub. Still drains though it is slower l and when I am done showering take barely over a minute to drain. Not backing as far as I can tell in the the first floor bathroom which is immediately below. Plumber wants to literally demolish the entire bathroom, rip out the walls and tub in both bathrooms. $12,000. Not including the thousands I would have to pay remodeling. I don’t bother with them. These are the same plumbers when he checked all the valves that are under the faucets and toilets that all 12 are frozen and to pay him $3,100 to replace them all. I simply unfroze 10 of them using a plumbers wrench. Three needed to be replaced but I did them myself. Only one gave me trouble due to how cramped it was.

    You have to use boiling hot water first and then boiling hot water after you put in the baking soda and vinegar. Instructions from Liquidplumr website: *4 STEPS TO UNCLOG YOUR DRAIN WITH BAKING SODA & VINEGAR* Follow these easy steps to unclog your drain: *STEP 1:* Start by pouring a pot of boiling water down the drain. *STEP 2:* Next, pour a cup of baking soda and 1 cup water/1 cup vinegar solution. *STEP 3:* Cover with the drain plug and wait 5 to 10 minutes. *STEP 4:* Pour boiling water down the drain again. The bubbling reaction from the baking soda and vinegar helps to loosen the drain clog, and the boiling water in step 4 helps remove it from your pipes.

    Ok, judging from the comments here it appears that many people have found success using baking soda and vinegar. But my question is different: does baking soda and vinegar damage cast iron piping?

    • @balkanplumbing
      @balkanplumbing Месяц назад

      Well vinegar is acidic and combining the two does create salt. Both those things hurt pipes. But I’m not really sure, because how frequently are you introducing those into your pipes anyway? Hard for me to say.

    • @maninthemiddle55
      @maninthemiddle55 Месяц назад

      @@balkanplumbing Thanks for the timely response. I may have answered my own question, from the Wikipedia entry on rust: “Other degrading solutions are sulfur dioxide in water and carbon dioxide in water. Under these corrosive conditions, iron hydroxide species are formed. Unlike ferrous oxides, the hydroxides do not adhere to the bulk metal. As they form and flake off from the surface, fresh iron is exposed, and the corrosion process continues until either all of the iron is consumed or all of the oxygen, water, carbon dioxide or sulfur dioxide in the system are removed or consumed. When iron rusts, the oxides take up more volume than the original metal; this expansion can generate enormous forces, damaging structures made with iron.” So the carbon dioxide and hydroxides formed from the neutralization of the vinegar with baking soda can/will degrade iron pipe. Your question, about how often the baking soda/vinegar combination is used, is spot on. I’ll use it only occasionally but not more than absolutely necessary.

    EXCELLENT EXPLAINED. Your demonstration about how by having the same pressure from a source gives different amount of water flow, due to having more or less resistance in the line, is correct. What most people seem to be confused about is Bernoulli's equation. Let me explain about it. Many considerations are needed in order to apply Bernoulli's equation. But two are essential, one is applying it in a single streamline, and the other one is to a steady system. The last condition refers to that there can't be a change of properties in time, so the system needs to be constant. This last assumption doesn't apply here, where someone compare the before and after the thumb was placed. When it wasn't placed your thumb, the section of the hose is larger than the nozzle, so as people say, velocity is increased at the expense of pressure at the exit, but this also happens when you put the thumb, so why does someone see that the pressure increase in the pressure gauge in the last scenario?! That's because of the system curve!! Roughly explained, when you have water flowing it needs to go against obstacles, that would include, pressure diferences, new heights, bendings, rugosity, etc. All these things considered tell how much pressure you need to apply to generate a flow rate, so with more obstacles, we need to apply more pressure in order to keep moving a flow! That's why when you put your thumb, the pressure increased. You created and obstacle, so that translates to needing more presssure in order for the flow to circulate! This is the same as thinking that you need more pressure to reach the top of a 20 floor building than a 6 floor one. There is also the pump curve to go in depth!! It relates the amount of flow given by a pump at a certain pressure. When you have 0 flow (because it is totally restricted, as with a close valved), you have max pressure provided by your pump, but this is the opposite when there is no restriction! Max Flow with 0 pressure! There topics are confusing at first sight, so i encourage you to look for pump and systems curves! Hope i clarify you a bit.

    Baking soda and vinegar are not used to clear a clog... It's more used to clean the open drains and keep them from clogging. I have never known any vinegar and baking soda to clear a clot. But to keep the drains open. Yes. I have never had a problem with that. You put the baking soda and vinegar in the drain and let it do its thing and after that, give it a hot water rinse. You should be fine after that, but to clear a clog,,,,,, no.

    I live in a really old house. In my basement i have a washing machine and a old sink that both connect to the main line. If i have a blockage in my second level bathtub will a clog on that floor cause water to fill up my sink in the basement or is that a clog in the sewer line under the basement floor? I also have two small cracked pvc pipes that go from the first floor to tge basement tgat run to the same sewer line. Will these 2 cracked pipes alos cause a issue with water not draining fast enough?

      A clog under the basement floor can come up out of your basement sink. A 2nd floor clog will not affect lower plumbing.

      No idea about the cracked pvc. If the cracks don’t leak I doubt they’d cause a clog. But sight unseen hard to say.

      @@balkanplumbing yes they are leaking. I had a bucket under them. I'm fixing them today. As I type this. I was curious if the cracks would lead to a issue with the water not flowing fast enough then causing it to come back up the sink in basement. I don't know if I'm asking it the right way. But basically if the pipes are not air tight. Due to the 2 cracks, will it not allow the water to exit properly there for some of it creeping up the sink drain. The sink drain runs to the main sewer line. Its less then 2 feet away from it

    I’ve used it as well on minor things. I think the key is minor things. It opened up the drain and water flowed more freely. I know for a fact it worked because it worked for me. I noticed they have a horizontal drain which is probably not the best most conclusive video you could make. Martha Stewart says it works.

    Great video and demonstration, loved the experiment you did. This is a very counterintuitive concept that is hard to understand at the beginning. I'm sorry but a couple points that I need to do here to clarify: 1) at 2:07 you said that when you restrict the flow pressure goes up and that is NOT the case. When you restrict flow pressure actually goes down, is conservation of energy and Bernoulli explains this clearly. When you put a nozzle pressure goes down but VELOCITY goes up, this is called continuity equation. If wanted I can go into the details. 2) On the second scenario that the gage goes to 0 is because the gage is so far off from the stream with those unions that the vacuum effect of the high flow of water prevents water to go up to the gage. I bet if you close the valve halfway you will see some pressure because now the vacuum effect is much less. Ideally to measure water pressure like that you will need you gage touching the stream of water or at least a Y and not a T. 3) Pressure is a given but Q=VA, where Q is flow, V is velocity of the fluid and A is cross sectional area so obviously a bigger pipe will increase flow. 4) On the main concept that Flow is more important than Pressure to fulfill a home demand you are correct
